CELL PHONE UNLOCKING
Unlocking your cell phone is your legal right as long as you are the owner of the phone. President Obama signed it into law July 2014. The key is you have to own the cell phone, not finance. For example, if you go to a car lot, pick out a car, get a loan and drive off with the car legally you do not own it. In other words you can not sell it or transfer it into another person's name or do you have possession of the title.
This is how the cell phone unlocking game works. If you walk into a Sprint, Verizon, AT&T, Metro PCS store and they offer to finance the cell phone you pick out, you don't own it. So you can't unlock that cell phone and take it to another service provider. So watch and be very vigilant of the papers you sign. a 90 day period is what many carriers provide when it comes to unlocking and moving to another service provider.
Some of the advantages of having your mobile phone unlocked are:
Choice, you have the opportunity to choose the service provider you want. This is very important because all phone companies have a map which shows their strong, medium and weak areas. If the initial service provider you choose doesn't have a strong signal that will mean nightmares for you. Missed calls, dropped call etc.
With a situation like that anyone would want to change cellular providers. If your cell phone isn't unlocked you will not be able to take your current cell phone to another service provider with a much stronger signal in your area.
Another situation is if you wake up in the morning and your service provider change their prices, decrease their data or do anything contrary to your initial agreement, you may want to change. If your cell phone is not unlocked you will not be able to do so.
